A desert and a hoverbike. These were the only two ingredients game developers Dan and Greg needed as they hauled off an early Sable build to a game jam held at the back of a London pub.

Working out of their family’s garden shed in 2016, the two took Sable from early pub-prototype to announcing the game in front of millions at E3 2018. Inspired by the delicate whimsy of Studio Ghibli, the clear lines of Moebius, and the free-form exploration of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Sable would release in 2021 and go on to win awards for its music, visuals and narrative.

“Sable: Design Works” charts the development of Sable, from early concept to launch and beyond, while highlighting the incredible artistry that lies behind this remarkable indie title.

Sable is the first instalment of Lost in Cult’s new series of indie-focussed art books, Design Works. Celebrating Sable’s one-year anniversary, this is a full and comprehensive exploration of the game. Join us as we unmask the creative process with extensive developer interviews and unparalleled insight as we dig beneath the surface dunes, unearthing entire catalogues of never-before-seen art.

The definitive art and making-of book, “Sable: Design Works” will take you on an expedition across the vast deserts of Midden, zooming in on the incredible landscapes that we all spent hours gliding across, complete with a trove of annotated concepts, sketches, maps, reference photos and visual assets.

The book will be split into two sections. The first charts the development of Sable from its early concept and prototype, through its production, and to launch. This is paired with extensive developer commentary and interviews, primarily with Gregorios Kythreotis (Creative Director), who carefully walks us through this long desert journey. Additional interviews with Daniel (the other half of Shedworks), Michelle Zauner (who produced Sable’s OST), Micah Holland (Animation), Martin Kvale (Sound Designer) Shanaz Byrne (Artist), and more.

The second half of the book focuses on the art and visuals of Sable — each chapter featuring a detailed individual analysis of Midden’s seven regions. This section breaks down the characters, costumes and stories associated with the area, while highlighting unique geography, ruins and monuments, fauna and flora, bike parts and masks. This section also includes a detailed map of Midden, level design layouts, locations over time, moodboards, a UI breakdown, logo designs, and various cut concepts.

This limited Deluxe edition entombs the book within a vibrant red slipcase, coloured after hoverbike Simoon’s dazzling jet-trails, debossed with a window into the world of Sable. Every Deluxe book is numbered and comes with a bespoke Sable bookplate signed by Shedworks’ Greg and Dan. The book and slipcase is bound in our uniquely-branded Lost in Cult “Design Works” Obi strip, and will be shipped in a unique, Sable branded mailbox which will also contain: six A5 concept art sketches, a folded map of Midden, a sticker sheet of Sable masks, and a celluloid-style bookmark showcasing animation frames from Sable (modelled after tickets from the official Ghibli Museum)!

The Deluxe edition will also include three unique cut-out architectural models designed by London model-maker Ellie Sampson. These come in three levels of complexity (beginner, intermediate and expert), along with precise instructions on how to construct (you’ll need a ruler, craft knife or scalpel, scissors, PVA glue and a protective surface!). The card models are: Beetle Tent, Ancient Race Monument (pictured) and Spaceship — subject to change.

*Due to minimum order quantities and potential cancellations, a very limited stock of deluxe books may be available at launch.
