"The cycle begins anew. Let our quiet mycelium lament the unrest, and return to what once was.

Few games sizzle on the screen quite like Ultros. An instant cult classic upon its 2024 release, this psychedelic ‘gardenvania’ looks, sounds, and plays quite unlike anything else. From its dazzling, prismatic visuals to its symphonic soundtrack, audacious gameplay mechanics, and deep philosophical and ecological themes, Ultros is nothing short of an indie game opus.

Our latest Design Works is an all-access pass into how Ultros was made. Made in collaboration with Hadoque and Kepler Interactive, this is a visual spectacle that celebrates what makes Ultros so special. We spoke to all five members of the core team, each an accomplished artist in their own right, and followed their journeys from the peaceful environs of Stockholm and Gothenburg to the wilds of the Peruvian rainforest, and beyond. The resulting conversations offer an eye-opening deep dive into the creative, technical, philosophical, and organisational processes of the game’s six-year development, and some invaluable and candid insights into the challenges of creating and releasing an indie game in the 2020s.

This Design Works explores the multidisciplinary creative process in great detail. The volume contains previously unpublished concept art and fascinating lore notes by Niklas 'El Huervo' Åkerblad. You'll return to the rainforests of Peru with Oscar 'Ratvader' Rydelius, to uncover the raw, natural soundscape which became an alien jungle symphony. There are behind-the-scenes looks at the game’s custom-built tools and systems from designers Hugo Bille and Mårten Brüggemann, and new Ultros poetry written by the game’s loremaster Pelle Cahndlerby.

Whether you’re interested in its spellbinding aesthetics, imaginative game design, deep lore or dark secrets, Design Works: Ultros offers unparalleled insight into one of the most creatively ambitious indie games of recent times.
