You’re Not Overthinking It sees Jacob Geller return to his extensive archive of video essays to obsessively re-examine his past work, picking through his scripts with a fine-tooth comb and pulling apart each decision that led to the videos’ creation and how his feelings — and/or the world — have changed since they were first published. This second instalment isn’t exclusively about video games, but instead sees Jacob look to some of his darker and more mature essays through the lens of art, politics, history and philosophy, thinking through and re-evaluating his work on everything from execution methods and our fear of the dark, to architecture designed for violence, infinity, and head transplants.

On top of Jacob’s annotated reassessments of ten of his best video essays, brand new artwork and media has been commissioned for each essay while acclaimed guest writers have been enlisted to expand on conversations with additional afterwords. Among them, Jamie Loftus, author of Raw Dog, extends the discussion on “The Men Who Couldn't Stop Crying”, Mike Rugnetta, one of the progenitors of the modern video essay, writes about “Head Transplants and the Non-Existence of the Soul”, while Remy Siu, Creative Director of 1000xResist, joins us to talk about why “Nothing Ever Stops Existing”. In addition, the brilliant Kilian Eng returns for our cover illustration, while we have brand new artwork from a slew of talented illustrators such as Dragan Bibin, Ollie Jones, Michael Deforge, Zé Burnay and more. Artist Richard Blake contributes a ten-page comic, including a spectacular gatefold spread, on 'The Shape of Infinity', while Kaveh Akbar, author of Martyr!, kicks things off with a foreword to explain why, exactly, You're Not Overthinking It.

“A lot of what I’ve been most proud of on my YouTube channel, when it feels like I’m taking the biggest risks, is when I step outside my comfortable place in the gaming world.” - Jacob Geller

Lost In Cult’s Premium Edition You’re Not Overthinking It book fits perfectly alongside Jacob Geller’s original How A Game Lives, with its large-format hardcover, section-sewn binding, buckram-textured cover, spot glossed endpapers and premium Munken Pure paper stock.

Our Deluxe Edition, exclusive to this 60-day campaign, comes wrapped in a Mandarin slipcase with embossed details and die-cut apertures that pick out details from Kilian Eng’s futuristic cityscape cover art. Also included is a 7-inch vinyl record featuring Ashley Young’s “Forgiving the Darkness” soundtrack, an A6 sticker sheet, an A4 print of Kilian Eng’s cover, and a You’re Not Overthinking It embroidered patch – all housed in a beautiful presentation box that extends our motif with more Imperial Blue and foiled details.

Most importantly, if you pre-order the Deluxe Edition of You’re Not Overthinking It within the first 48 hours of this campaign (up until 6PM BST on Thursday, 18th of September 2025), Jacob Geller has promised to sign your copy! Your signed edition will come with a custom bookplate attached to the inside. In addition, the first 1000 orders will have their names included in the back of the book as a sign of their support.

Deluxe Editions exclusive to our limited 60-day campaign.

“On YouTube, it feels like the natural impulse is towards disposability. Your work only matters as much as your last video, your view count either goes up or down. But this, here, is my push in the opposite direction.” - Jacob Geller

“With this on your shelf, on my shelf, there will be some remnant of my work that’s maintained for the future.” - Jacob Geller

Lost in Cult is once again partnering with publishing powerhouse HarperCollins, bringing Jacob Geller’s How A Game Lives to global retail. As with Lost In Cult’s original Premium Edition book, this version includes ten of Jacob’s most iconic essays accompanied by brand-new commentary, brought to life by stunning original artwork by Kilian Eng and other exceptional artists, and with afterwords on each piece by some of the gaming industry’s very best writers.

Coming in a slightly smaller, but still hardback, format, HarperCollin’s more accessible retail edition will be available at most major book retailers and bookshops in November, making it the perfect holiday gift.
